The dark horse of Himachal Pradesh tourism: Kasauli

When you come across the state Himachal Pradesh, what are you reminded of? Those gigantic mountains, the cold breeze, the bounteous nature are some of the things we surely know must have come into your mind. Some of you also might have thought of Shimla, Manali, Kasol. But, have you ever heard of Kasauli? Many people often mistake it to be Kasol, and the Desi Diaries attempts to remove that misconception and introduces you to this small yet breathtaking city.

Where is it?

Kasauli is located in Solan district, and it is 77 km from Shimla, 65 km from Chandigarh and 94 km from Ambala Cantt.

If you are someone who wants to “escape to a place where nobody will disturb you”, head to Kasauli, where you can sit quietly and enjoy the gorgeous view of your balcony/window/terrace. If you are an active and adventurous type, then a long walk will be great, in which your lungs will thank you for the pure and fresh air. If you are way too adventurous, you can go to the Timber Trail, which is situated in Parvanoo, to enjoy the ropeway ride which takes you through the mountains.

Shopaholics, Kasauli also has the Mall, which is near the Cantt. You can also savor some momos, Maggi, pizza, pakoras, noodles at the small eateries in the Mall. But, just be careful about the monkeys.

If you have your own car and you have planned a trip of a long duration of days, you can even go to Shimla, which is 2.5 hours away from Kasauli.

You can take a train, bus or flight to Chandigarh but you would have to hire a taxi to reach Kasauli. Jaipurites, if you are brave enough to go there on a road trip, then you have to drive via Panipat, and it takes 8 to 10 hours.

Timber Trail Heights

We know you have those travel apps, but still, there are numerous hotels and resorts in Kasauli that provide you rooms in varying prices, which would suit everyone whether they have a big or a small budget. There are also some guest houses for those individuals who want a “homely” feel. The Timber Trail, which we had mentioned about, also has resorts like Timber Trail Heights and Moksha Himalaya Spa Resort, which are the two most popular resorts of Timber Trail.

Kasauli, due to its proximity to states like Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, is like a weekend getaway for citydwellers, especially if they have their houses there. Obviously, winter is the great time to go for that asli thand ka mazaa, but mid-August is also a good time, especially if you are fond of watching the clouds descend on the mountains and enter your door or window, while anticipating the rainfall.
